Switchboard Upgrades and Relocations

If you live in Brisbane and your home was built before 1992, there is a high chance your fuse board still has porcelain fuses in service.

This can pose a serious fire risk due to overloading and overcrowding of the meter board. The best way to reduce the risk is with switchboard upgrades from Martel Electrical.

Martel Electrical is a qualified and experienced team of electricians in North Brisbane. We are equipped to install, upgrade and relocate switchboards across Brisbane. As part of our service, we’ll design a switchboard that’s safe and powerful enough for all your home appliances.

Upgrading your switchboard ensures your home has the latest circuit breakers and safety switches. These features work together to protect your home and family from potentially deadly electrical faults.

Signs Your Switchboard Needs to be Upgraded

Switchboard technologies are always changing to improve safety and the way power is delivered to our homes.

Old and faulty switchboards are a safety hazard and a common cause of electrical faults, fires and shocks. If you notice any of the following problems, it’s time to upgrade your switchboard:

  • Flickering lights
  • Safety switches and circuit breakers frequently trip for no reason
  • The board features porcelain fuses (as pictured)
  • No safety switches present (check for a "Test" button)
  • Exposed cabling
  • No earth stake present

You may also need to upgrade your switchboard if you want to install power-hungry devices. Modern appliances like EV chargers and large air conditioners need lots of electricity.

Upgrading your switchboard will allow you to install these appliances without worrying about electrical safety.

The Dangers of Using an Outdated Switchboard

About 40% of house fires are caused by electrical faults. Many of these problems originate from outdated switchboards and fuse boards.

Old style switchboards and fuse boards pose a serious electrical hazard. These power distribution boards lack modern safety switches and circuit breakers. This increases the risk of fires and electrocution.

The best way to keep your family safe is to upgrade to a modern switchboard that’s compliant with AS/NZS 61439.

Modern switchboards feature safety switches and circuit breakers that protect your family and electrical wiring, preventing fires and shocks.

Switchboard FAQs

When or why should I upgrade my switchboard?

You should upgrade your switchboard if:

  • Your home uses a porcelain fuse board
  • Circuit breakers regularly trip
  • Circuit breakers trip when you turn on too many appliances at once
  • Your lights flicker or the power supply is inconsistent
  • There are no safety switches installed in the switchboard

Most of these issues can be addressed by upgrading the existing switchboard. A professional electrician can install and upgrade circuit breakers, safety switches and the associated wiring to provide the power you need.

How long does it take to upgrade a switchboard?

Upgrading a switchboard only takes 1-2 hours if we’re changing circuit breakers and wiring. It typically takes 3-5 hours to replace or relocate your switchboard. The process may take longer if you need major wiring upgrades or relocation as part of the project.

How much is a switchboard upgrade in Brisbane?

It costs about $800 for an average switchboard replacement in Brisbane. You can expect to pay substantially more if you need to upgrade and relocate the switchboard, wiring, circuit breakers and safety switches as well.

What to do if the safety switch goes off?

Safety switches are tripped by an interruption in the flow of electricity that could be harmful. They sometimes trip due to other faults. You can reset them by:

  • Unplugging all appliances on the power circuit that tripped
  • Flipping the safety switch back to its ON position
  • If the switch stays on, you can plug all your appliances back in
  • If the switch trips again, contact an electrician to investigate the issue

How do I find the safety switch?

Safety switches are located in your switchboard. While they look similar to circuit breakers, each safety switch includes a coloured test button that is labelled “Test” or “T”.
